If you want to be an entrepreneur, is a college education worth it these days? A lot of people argue that a college education is no longer necessary. They argue that it is too expensive and doesn’t really teach you anything useful. Anything you want to learn you can learn in the “real world.” I tend to disagree mostly with this argument but there is some truth to it. A college education is very valuable because it teaches you how to think and to solve problems. Moreover, because today’s world is so much more information-centric, you’re better off learning useful things such as computer science or engineering or some other discipline that can give you more relevant skills in the work force. Any business venture that you plan to embark upon should go through the “3Cs and 4Ps” exercise. While at first you may think that you’re wasting your time, you’ll soon realize how incredibly valuable and insightful this exercise is. It may seem simple, but the “3Cs and 4Ps” exercise really allows you to think about a business venture in a structured way. Once you force yourself to really go through this exercise, you’ll realize how much you didn’t know about the business idea you had in mind.

Let’s review what the 3 Cs and the 4 Ps are. The 3 Cs are: Company, Customer and Competition. The 4 Ps are Product, Price, Promotion and Place (distribution). Here is a little more detail about each part of this exercise. (more…)

Using Dropbox As Your Company’s Network Drive

This article resonated with me because we use Dropbox all the time at Bundle City. In fact, it has completely replaced our internal network. Where in the past we would store documents on network drives, now we put everything in Dropbox. That way, not only can we access those files while in the office but we can access them from anywhere.

Moreover, Dropbox allows us to securely share very large files with people outside of our organization. Gone are the days where we have to send emails with very large attachments. Now we just include a link to the file that’s stored in Dropbox. This way the email recipient simply clicks on the link and views the file as if it were an attachment to the email.

This is a great example of an innovation that allows small companies like ours to operate as if we were a multi-national company. If you’ve got a small business, you need to be aware of and use these types of innovations to even the playing field.

The Purpose of This Blog

The purpose of this blog is to discuss my views and experiences with ecommerce and technology. Friends and colleagues frequently ask me technology-related questions so I figured I should put my thoughts into a blog. This way others will benefit from the things I’ve done correctly and learn from the things I’ve done incorrectly.

So far in my career I have had quite a bit of experience with the Internet and ecommerce. I started my career in an IT consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry. While in IT consulting I worked my way through the ranks to become a practice director. I had the good fortune to work with many of the largest healthcare organizations in the United States and Canada on some of their most challenging IT projects.

After seven years in the IT consulting industry I decided that I wanted to venture out on my own so I founded Bundlecity.com. We started the business selling consumer electronics on eBay. With a lot of hard work we grew Bundlecity.com into a multi-channel retailer selling on several marketplaces as well as on our own retail websites. (more…)
